Unpublished event, the retrospective Jakuchū (1716-1800) at the Petit Palais has the advantage of primeur. Presented for the first time in Europe, the Japanese painter has everything to conquer his audience. Refinement of the line, power of contrasts, liveliness of the palette give it a place apart. Renowned as eccentric, this artist from the Edo period (1603-1867) is distinguished from all artistic movements of his time. On the theme of the colorful kingdom of living beings, his thirty scrolls on display at the Petit Palais make nature the favorite subject. But far from a naturalistic invoice, the extreme stylization of his art leads to flowers and animals in a majesty out of the ordinary. The expressionist poetry of Itō Jakuchū could not find a better setting than the Petit Palais. Once you have tasted its dazzling style, the museum garden, exuberant and exotic, will be a stop of the same tone.
