Colonia Güell
The Güell Colony was designed by the renowned Spanish architect Antonio Gaudí. This esteemed architect of the 19th century erected numerous buildings, churches, and building facades, now famous worldwide, with some even recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage. You've likely heard of the famous "Sagrada Familia", Güell Park with its almost legendary architecture, or the "Casa Milà" (also known as La Pedrera). But have you heard of the extraordinary Colonia Güell?
An Architectural Journey near Barcelona
Colonia Güell is a complex of structures built near a factory away from the city, allowing workers to live close to their workplace in decent conditions. The overall architecture of this colony was conceived by Gaudí. The distinctive marks of this artist are evident in this area, with the use of traditional materials such as ceramics, mosaic, glass, iron, all skillfully crafted for an original and creative result, perfectly representing the modernism of the time through popular Catalan architecture. This colony houses numerous well-preserved buildings that can be visited, such as the old cooperative, the school, the Fontova theater, etc. And not to forget one of its main highlights, which is one of the architectural gems of this colony: the Gaudí Crypt. Also known as the "monumental model of the Sagrada Familia", it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005 and is located less than 20 minutes from Barcelona. Its architecture, blending natural materials and unique design, allows it to harmonize with the rocky landscape of the region. This architectural wonder is a must-visit for modern art enthusiasts.
