What to expect

In this landmark exhibition, the Pompidou Centre honours one of the greatest documentary photographers and film makers of the 20th century. To see the work of David Goldblatt is to witness the dark history of South Africa, his home country. For more than 70 years, this passionate artist trained his unique eye on the everyday life of ordinary South Africans, how they lived under apartheid, tracking complex social relationships under a repressive regime, until apartheid ultimately fell. David Goldblatt was born into a family of Lithuanian Jewish refugees whose political views fostered his own singular vision. His work immortalises people and their daily struggles without prejudice, inviting viewers to reflect and to make up their own minds. This retrospective at the Pompidou Centre offers visitors the opportunity to discover or rediscover Goldblatt's major series 'On The Mines', taking you underground to witness the reality of daily mine life, as well as showcasing his dramatic work in the apartheid townships.
